Petrol and Diesel Market Price vs. Formula Price in August 2025
Abstract
Fuel prices remained unchanged in August 2025, with the market price of Octane 92 Petrol at LKR 305.00 and Auto Diesel at LKR 289.00. However, the formula price for petrol fell to LKR 296.10 from LKR 301.12 in July, while the formula price for diesel rose to LKR 279.99 from LKR 272.25 over the same period.
The drop in the formula price for petrol led to the market price exceeding it by LKR 8.90, the highest margin recorded since January 2025. This caused the market price to breach the allowable variation threshold* stipulated by the pricing formula.
Similarly, the retail price of diesel continues to exceed its formula price. In August the gap between the retail and formula price stood at LKR 9.01, which surpasses the allowable variable threshold. This breach has persisted since April 2025, although the gap has narrowed since June.
