Petrol and Diesel Market Price vs. Formula Price in October 2025

Abstract

On 01 October 2025, the market price of Octane 92 Petrol remained unchanged at LKR 299.00, while the market price of Auto Diesel had reduced to LKR 277.00 from the LKR 283.00 price at the start of September. Over that period, the prices computed by the cost recovery formula (formula price) increased. For petrol, it increased to LKR 300.62 (from LKR 295.93); for diesel, it increased to LKR 277.73 (from LKR 270.73). The increase in the formula price is due to the increase in the reference index prices in the global market. This means that for both petrol and diesel, the current prices align with the formula price*. This is the first time since March 2025 that the market price of diesel has aligned with the formula price (previously market price has been higher).
