Abstract
On June 24, 2024, Lankadeepa, Divaina, Dinamina, Mawbima, and Aruna reported an incident involving the gang rape of a female student. While Lankadeepa used the appropriate term “athawara” (අතවර), the other newspapers used derogatory terms such as “kelesu” (කෙලෙසූ) and “dushanaya” (දූෂණය) in their headlines, which can intensify negative attitudes and behaviours. Using such terms in headlines marginalises victims of sexual crimes and is considered unethical.
