Abstract

During the month of April 2023, several Sinhala, English newspapers and Sinhala TV channels, i.e. Aruna, Dinamina, Divaina, Lankadeepa, Mawbima, Daily News, Hiru TV news and Derana Aruna newspapers reading program, violated these media ethical guidelines regarding suicide. No helplines were mentioned, the method of suicide was reported, pictures of the people who died by suicide and photos of the bodies were published, suicide notes were published, suicide was prominently reported, usage of phrases like committed suicide, which indicates that suicide was a crime. While local media violated ethical guidelines regarding a celebrity suicide, foreign media reported ethically about the same incident.
