Abstract

During the month of May 2022, several tv primetime news telecasts covered the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, where different channels adopted different framings and varied in their coverage of the Inland Revenue (Amendment) Act and the appointment of new members to the COPE committee. On October 3 Derana, Hiru, ITN, Sirasa, Swarnavahini, and Siyatha reported the appointment of new members to the COPE committee, whilst Rupavahini did not report it. On October 12, Derana, Hiru, Sirasa, Swarnavahini, and Siyatha reported the gazetting of the Inland Revenue (Amendment) Act in the headlines, whilst ITN and Rupavahini did not report it in the headlines. On October 13, Derana, Hiru, ITN, Sirasa, Swarnavahini, and Siyatha reported opinions that were expressed against the Inland Revenue (Amendment), whilst Rupavahini did not report the opposing opinions.
