Abstract

During the month of March 2022, media ethics guidelines pertaining to reporting on suicide were violated by several newspapers and newspaper reading programs.

Aruna, Lankadeepa, Mawbima, Paththare Wisthare and Derana Aruna reported on a father taking his life owing to economic difficulties, in which the method of suicide was irrelevantly mentioned. The articles did not carry helplines.

Aruna, Lankadeepa, Dinamina, Mawbima, Paththare Wisthare, Derana Aruna and Swarnavahini Paththare reported on a murder-suicide incident, which carried the following ethical violations - reporting on suicide with prominence, mentioning the method of suicide, not including helplines and blaming the victim.
