Abstract

On June 30, 2024, Sathi Aga Aruna and Mawbima newspapers reported four incidents using derogatory terms such as “Surupi” (සුරූපී), “Surupiniyan” (සුරූපිනියන්), and “Nambara kelilol tharuniya” (නාඹර කෙළිලොල් තරුණිය) to describe women which is considered unethical. These terms unnecessarily emphasized the women’s appearance, which was irrelevant to the stories and contributed to their sexual objectification.
