Abstract
On June 12, 2024, the Sinhala newspapers Aruna, Lankadeepa, Ada and Dinamina reported, citing the Thalangama Police, that two people, including the deceased's husband, had been arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly attempting to mislead the police by filing a false complaint that his wife had been mysteriously murdered. Dinamina, Ada, and Lankadeepa published a photograph of the deceased woman, while Aruna and Dinamina provided a detailed account of the incident. These reports used sensitive language and emphasised personal details, aiming to intensify the emotional and frightening aspects of the story. In reporting on cases of murder or death, the media is advised to uphold ethical standards by avoiding the disclosure of personal information or photographs that reveal the identities of victims as well as suspects, and to refrain from publishing information that may cause unnecessary distress to the family or friends of the deceased.
