On June 13, 2024, the Dinamina, Mawbima, Ada, and Lankadeepa newspapers reported an incident involving the arrest of an actress accused of trafficking women as sex workers to wealthy individuals. In their coverage, these newspapers highlighted the women’s physical appearance by using the term “suruupi” (සුරූපී), along with the marginalising term “ganika” (ගණිකා) in both the headlines and the content. Media is advised to avoid using such terms, as they contribute to marginalisation and sexual objectification of women.en_US
