එක් පුවතක් සහ පුවත්පත් තුනක් - “සුරූපිනියන්” / “සුරූපී” සහ “ගණිකා”
Abstract
On 14 June 2024, Lankadeepa and on 16 June 2024, Divaina and Sati Aga Aruna newspapers reported on the arrest of an actress accused of using women for prostitution. In their reporting, these newspapers repeatedly and unnecessarily highlighted the physical appearance of women by using the terms “suruupi” (සුරූපී) and “suruupiniyan” (සුරූපිනියන්), along with the marginalising term “ganika” (ගණිකා). This infographic shows how often the word “ganika” is mentioned in news reporting and how often the physical appearance of women is mentioned. The use of such terms reinforces harmful stereotypes and contributes to the sexual objectification of women. Therefore, the media is advised to refrain from using these terms to prevent the sexual objectification and marginalisation of women.
