On May 30, 2024, TV Derana and Hiru TV reported that a woman attempted suicide and was rescued by villagers and the police. Both channels did not mention any helpline numbers in their reporting and described how she attempted suicide, while TV Derana also interviewed the woman, which violated media ethical guidelines. The media is advised to follow ethical guidelines even when reporting serious incidents such as suicides, sexual harassment and crimes, and to refrain from reporting in a negative or sensationalist manner.en_US
