Abstract

The foreign news of the arrest of a Chinese national who tried to carry more than a hundred snakes at a border checkpoint was reported by the Sinhala newspapers Lankadeepa on July 15, 2024 and Aruna on July 12, 2024 using the derogatory term "Cheena" (චීනා) in the headline that violate media ethics. Meanwhile, Dinamina on 11 July 2024 used the term “Chinese national” (චීන ජාතිකයා) thus complied with media ethical guidelines.
