    Abstract
In September 2023, Sinhala newspapers Dinamina, Mawbima, Lankadeepa, Divaina and Aruna published articles which sensationalised the different incidents which had occurred. On the 5th of September, Dinamina, Mawbima, Lankadeepa, Divaina and Aruna reported on the death of a counsellor. The incident had been sensationalised through the headlines which had been used. On the 6th of September Dinamina and Aruna sensationalised the death of a person at a massage parlour. On the 15th of September, Dinamina, Divaina, Aruna and Lankadeepa reported headlines which quoted a son who had received a death sentence. The papers mentioned that the son had killed the man who was having an affair with his mother. The son had said that he was going to face death because of his mother's affair. The papers had sensationalised this reporting. On the 22nd of September, an incident where a man had assaulted his relative for having squeezed his sister's hand was reported in the Sinhala newspapers. Ada reported this incident in an ethical manner. But Dinamina included a picture of a knife, while Aruna had a cartoon to depict the scene which was being described, and by doing so, sensationalised the news report. On the 27th of September, Dinamina, Lankadeepa, Mawbima, Aruna and Divaina published articles about a female who had been arrested for online sexual crimes. Lankadeepa, Mawbima and Divaina published headlines which sought to sensationalise the news story.
