This entry includes an infographic and a write-up in Sinhala.
On 29 July 2024, Derana TV aired a news report about a man who posed as a police constable, deceived several women, robbed their jewellery and money, and then sexually assaulted them. The report referred to the women as "සුරූපී (Surupi)." References to physical appearance can contribute to the objectification and stereotyping of women. Media outlets are encouraged to present facts objectively and avoid sensational language.
