This entry includes an infographic and a write-up in Sinhala.
On August 1, 2024, the Aruna newspaper reported on two incidents involving Chinese nationals. In reporting the incident where they were victims, the report used the term “චීන ජාතිකයන්” (Chinese nationals), and in the second incident where they were suspects, it was reported in a derogatory manner, referring to them as “චීන්නු” (Chennu). The media is advised to refrain from using such derogatory terms, especially in negative contexts as they may lead to the marginalization of foreign nationals.
