On June 25, 2024, Siyatha, Hiru TV, TV Derana, and Swarnawahini television channels and on June 26, 2024, Divaina, Ada, Lankadeepa, Aruna, Mawbima, and Dinamina newspapers reported the suicide of an Advanced Level student in Ulapane. Only the Siyatha television channel and Ada newspaper included helplines in their coverage, while the others did not. Except for Hiru TV, TV Derana and Dinamina newspaper, other media reported the incident prominently in the main headlines. Siyatha TV is the only media that did not describe the method used in the suicide. TV Derana along with the Divaina, Ada and Lankadeepa newspapers reported alleged reason for the suicide. The media is advised to avoid reporting on suicides without providing helplines, stating reasons for them or describing the methods used, as these can act as a catalyst for further suicides.en_US
