On January 30, 2024, television news channels reported that police used tear gas and high-pressure water cannons to disperse a protest by the Kelaniya University Students' Union on January 29, 2024. It was held against the university administration's decision to invite President Ranil Wickremesinghe to the opening ceremony of a new building. Sirasa, Swarnawahini, TV Derana, Hiru TV, and Siyatha reported the story and clearly stated the reason during their prime Sinhala news bulletins. ITN reported the incident without mentioning the reason, while Rupavahini did not cover the story.en_US
