On January 5, 2024, Aruna newspaper reported on the arrest of two suspects on charges of organizing a beauty pageant and luring women into sexual crimes. Although the news content mentions that sexual harassment occurred, the headline does not reflect this fact. It trivializes sexual crime and frames it in a way that seems to blame the female victims. Furthermore, the use of the term “suruupi landun” (සුරූපී ළඳුන්) depicted them as sexual objects. Media guidelines advise against using such terms, as they emphasize the physical appearance of women and can contribute to sexual objectification.en_US
