Female Representation in Sri Lankan Legislature (1931 - 2023)
Abstract
In light of International Women's Day, which was celebrated on 8 March, Manthri.lk explored Sri Lanka's female representation in the legislature since 1931. Female representation in both the State Council (1931 to 1947) and in the House of Representatives (1947 to 1960) was less than 5% in Sri Lanka. From 1978 onwards, the number of female MPs in Parliament increased, but the percentage of female representatives in the legislature has never exceeded 6%.
