Abstract

In the month of September 2018, Divaina, Lakbima, Mawbima, Lankadeepa, Virakesari and Thinakkural reported suicides without including suicide helplines while including method of suicide, giving prominence to suicide in the heading, simplifying reasons for suicide, publishing images of the victim and relations which is a violation of media ethical guidelines. This entry also includes an infographic which shows the number of news reports (Divaina, Mawbima, Lankadeepa, Dinamina, Sunday Divaina, Sunday Lankadeepa, Silumina and Sunday Mawbima) that violated media ethics in reporting suicides in the first 8 months of 2018.
