Abstract

In the month of October 2021, articles published in Lankadeepa and Lankadeepa Online contained several media ethical violations. On October 1, Lankadeepa published a photo of a mass gathering, claiming that it was the crowd that gathered at an Indian airport to welcome the Sri Lankan singer Yohani de Silva, though it was later found that the image was from a previous event elsewhere. Thus the picture was misleading. However, Lankadeepa ran a correction and an apology the following day. On October 4, Lankadeepa Online that published an article on a suicide contained images of the couple that took their lives. This was a violation of media ethics on reporting on suicide. Nevertheless, it was seen later that Lankadeepa Online had removed the photos from the article. On October 7, Lankadeepa Online reported on three women being promoted to senior DIGs in the police. The article carried a sexist headline as it read "three pairs of hands that rock cradles to high positions in the police", which is against media ethics that recommend not to stereotype women.
